PARIS, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- 29-year-old Chinese cyclist Qian Wangwei narrowly missed the gold, earning a silver medal behind defending champion Amanda Reid of Australia in the women's C1-3 500m time trial at the Paris Paralympics on Saturday.

"I'm thrilled with my performance, but it's not perfect," said Qian while reflecting on her race. The Tokyo bronze medalist had every reason to be proud of herself, as she not only shattered her personal best, but also broke the world record with a time of 40.878 seconds for the C1 division twice, surpassing her own expectations.

According to the competition rules, athletes are categorized into different classes (C1 to C5) based on the severity of their impairment, with C1 being the most severe. During the events involving multiple classes, athletes' time is adjusted according to their impairment levels. That explains why Qian, despite setting an impressive new world record, was awarded the silver medal.

"We hoped she could break 41 seconds, but we didn't expect her to surpass it that much. It's incredible, especially considering her knee injury, which was a big concern before the Games," said Song Nianchun, Qian's coach in the national team, expressing his admiration for the tenacious girl beside him.

"Even though she didn't win the gold, I'm confident she'll continue to chase her dreams and achieve even greater success in the future," he added.

Reflecting on Qian's journey to a shining silver, it has always been about overcoming obstacles and constantly surpassing her limits.

Born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, Qian was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age. Her introduction to the sport was serendipitous, as her talent was discovered by a para cycling coach when she competed in a local para athletics competition in 2014.

Since then, she was selected to join the Jiangsu para cycling team, where she began her rigorous training in the sport. However, those early years were everything but easy.

Due to her impaired balance, Qian frequently fell off her bike, with one particularly severe fall costing her four front teeth. The physical pain was compounded by the emotional struggle of failing to win, leaving her uncertain about her future in the sport.

"There were times when I thought about giving up," Qian admitted. "Training hard without titles in the first three years made it difficult to see a bright future. But when I thought about how far I'd come, I knew it would be too wasteful to stop."

Qian had countless moments of inner conflict until 2018, when her determination eventually paid off. Qian made a breakthrough at the 10th National Para Games, winning one gold, two silvers and one bronze, which marked her emergence as a significant force in para cycling.

Over the past decade, Qian's career has been adorned with multiple World Championships titles, Paralympic medals and world records. Each achievement is a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence, as she continually challenges herself and strives for greater heights.

"Sometimes I trained four or five hours a day, and afterward, I would collapse on my bed, unwilling to move. It felt like my legs didn't even belong to me anymore," she recalled with a smile of relief. "But being able to compete in the Paralympics makes it all worthwhile."

Qian still feels unfulfilled towards the future, but her voice carries confidence more than ever. "Every athlete dreams of winning the gold女同 偷拍, and I'll continue to fight on this track until I make it."  ■
